About this Course...
Have you always wanted to start ski touring or split boarding? Looking to learn about safety in the backcountry?
If the answer is YES then this introductory camp is for you! We will provide you with the guidance needed to effectively set a skin track, all the tips and tricks to change over your equipment, list of necessities for a day touring in the backcountry and you will gain the confidence needed for you to head out with your touring shred crew. Learn techniques on how to efficiently use your energy while touring to allow you to get the maximum amount out of your tours.
PLUS get your Avalanche Safety Training 1 Certification!
Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (AST 1) is your stepping stone into the backcountry. This course is a must have if you plan on ducking that rope & leaving the resort behind.
This course will cover avalanche formation and release, identifying avalanche terrain, the basics of trip planning, tools and resources to mitigate your avalanche risk, appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain and basic companion rescue.
Our partner on this adventure is Brittney Dickson from Stay Wild Backcountry! Besides being an all around incredible human being and adventurer, she has completed her Canadian Avalanche Association Level 1 Avalanche Operations, 90 hour wilderness first aid and is an active member of the CAA. With 10 years experience on a sled and 5 years on a splitboard she is full of tips and tricks to either get you started or to take your riding to the next level. She is passionate about teaching Avalanche Skills Training and spreading knowledge to others in the backcountry.

Here's the plan...
8:00 – 4:00 AST 1 classroom session at Golden and District Search & Rescue Hall (210 Fisher RD. Golden, BC)
*5:00 - Optional dinner together in town
8:30 – Meet at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort parking lot, gear check, purchase tickets, discuss avalanche bulletin and objective for the day
9:30 – Load the gondola
10:00 – Start our tour up to Companion Rescue area. Will go over learn to tour tips and tricks along the way. Best strategies to save energy.
11:00 – Terrain evaluation and route finding discussion
12:00 – Lunch on mountain
12:30 – Companion Rescue group scenario
2:30 – Shoveling, probing and transceiver techniques
3:30 – Look at our objective for the next day & start back to the parking lot
4:00 – Group debrief in the parking lot
*4:30 - Optional après at the brewery in town
8:30 Meet at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort parking lot, gear check, purchase tickets, discuss avalanche bulletin and objective for the day
9:00 – Load the gondola
9:30 – Start our tour up answering questions and giving advice along the way
10:30 – Terrain evaluation and route selection discussion
11:30 – Continue to tour towards our objective
12:00 – Lunch
12:30 – Go over the ins and outs of an effective change over from up mode to down
1:30 – Ski lap down Rudy’s south
2:00 – Depending on time and energy levels may go for a second lap or practice skills down low
3:30 – Head back to parking lot
4:00 – Parking lot debrief, hand out backcountry check-list and answer any questions

How are The Lady Alliance events different from other events?
The number one goal is to introduce you to other kick-ass, adventurous women. It’s all about building community! Our second goal is to introduce you to the outdoors. It’s quite the thing to witness, putting a group of women who are passionate about the outdoors in an epic location. We know it’s a cliche thing to say… but it’s where the magic happens.
Do you arrange transport to the event?
No, all transport to and from the event will be your responsibility unless stated otherwise. We will encourage you to join us on our Facebook group The Lady Alliance Community to help you plan your carpool rides!
When should I book my flight?
We have a minimum number of attendees for this trip to carry through. If you are booking a flight to the location of this event please hold off booking until we have confirmed with you that the minimum number has been reached. Be sure to book a day that allows you to get there before the arrival date and time!
Is food included?
Yes. Unless otherwise specified in the trip itinerary or information.
Is there a minimum age for this event?
Unless otherwise mentioned, 19+ for all events in Canada. 21+ for all events in the USA.
I want to book with friends. How do I do that?
The best way is to add all of the tickets to one cart, that way you know if we have enough spaces.
I'm coming solo. Is that okay?
YES! More than 70% of women who sign up for our trips, sign up solo.
Is a deposit required to secure my place?
Deposits, or full payments, vary trip by trip. Payment prior to the trip is needed to secure your place.
What if I need to cancel?
Please let us know as soon as possible. Unfortunately we are unable to offer refunds but you can transfer your ticket. If you can no longer make the event, please get in touch to discuss transferring your ticket.
What is your refund policy?
Due to the nature of The Lady Alliance retreats, we don’t offer refunds. We do, however, offer transfers. You are responsible for finding someone to transfer your ticket to and arranging the exchange of funds for your ticket. If you can no longer make the event, please get in touch to discuss transferring your ticket.
Who will be managing our trip?
One or two of our awesome chapter coordinators will be running your retreat!
Do I have to join in on all the activities?
No. You are not required to join in on all the activities. You can still join us on the retreat, the ticket price remains the same. You do you!
What if the weather doesn't cooperate?
Let’s be honest, Mother Nature never cooperates. That’s why we love her. Keep an eye on the forecast and pack accordingly. We never let uncooperative weather ruin our fun!
